Papers, 1861-1864.

A muster roll, 12-31-1863 to 2-29-1864, for Company C, 50th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, and a scrapbook of newspaper articles, 1861-1864. The scrapbook, kept by Anderson, includes poems; short stories; jokes; illustrations of home life; descriptions of the war from Northern, Southern, and European sources; descriptions of battles at Valverde, Shiloh, Corinth, Fort Donelson, and Vicksburg; and an article on the killing of Major General Nelson by Brigadier General Jefferson C. Davis. Most of the articles do not include dates or sources.

Anderson was a resident of Salem, Washington County, Ind. He served with the 50th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, Company C, during the Civil War. The regiment saw duty along the line of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad; in Jackson and Memphis, Tenn.; and in Little Rock, Arkansas. The 50th regiment was consolidated with the 52nd regiment. Davis was born in Clark County, Indiana, near present-day Memphis, Indiana. He was born to William Davis, Jr. (1800–1879) and Mary Drummond-Davis (1801–1881), the oldest of their eight children. His father was a farmer. His parents came from Kentucky, and like many of the time including President Abraham Lincoln's family, moved to Indiana.
